What Is Yoga
The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit language & means to unite or harmonize. In other words Yoga means working towards a level where the activities of the mind & body function together harmoniously!
Yoga is a system of health maintenance that is long lasting & cultivates a sense of happiness and fulfillment. It achieves this by teaching us to tap into inner energy reserves & generate health and happiness from within.
Yoga enhances the health & youthfulness of the body & clarity of the mind. Thus regular practice can help to counter general physical decline from aging, poor habits & the accumulation of excess tension.
The Benefits of Yoga
Well Being & Happiness
Taking the time to be with your body, still your mind. Controlled deep breathing helps to calm the nervous system, relax the body & mind!
Enhanced Body Awareness
Yoga means becoming more familiar with your body (inner & outer landscape), as the different Yoga postures or poses are designed to benefit the anatomical structure, systems & organs in the body.
This process on learning how to assist the body in its healthy functioning can be empowering. It teaches the student how to make changes in the body, mind & emotional state, thereby taking control of their life and health (physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually)!
Fitness & Flexibility
Regular Yoga practice like any form of physical practice can speed up the metabolism resulting in weight loss!
Using the body as resistance builds lean strong muscles & stretching results in increased flexibility and injury prevention!
Stress Relief & Prevention
Life today is fast paced, competitive & stressful. When the demands placed upon us greatly exceed our habitual levels of performance or coping (whether they are physical, emotional or mental), we suffer discomfort & strain. The body's defenses become over worked & exhausted. Side effects include frustration, muscular tension (resulting in back problems), depression, anxiety, shortness of breath & problems in concentration. Yoga works to free the body from these symptoms of stress. Yoga uses flexibility exercises that are helpful in preventing or alleviating muscular tension. Controlled deep breathing helps to counter shortness or irregularity of breath. Meditation enhances patience & clarity of mind & improves the ability to cope with stress!
Yoga is a dynamic practice. It is not a question of moving the body into weird & wonderful shapes. These shapes, by the very nature of their innate integrity, are charged with a highly vibrant radiance.
They are energized from within. This energy radiates outwards, filling the whole body with a palpable & visible charge that shimmers, out of the skin.

You cannot do Yoga. Yoga is your natural state. What you can do are Yoga exercises, which may reveal to you where you are resisting your natural state. What is this natural state? Eternal, everlasting happiness: bliss.
